Special Precautions of Boneset

  • Don’t confuse Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) with Teazle (Dipsacus fullonum), which is also called teasel.
  • There is another herb that also goes by the name boneset : Comfrey (Symphytum officinal), which should not be consumed, as it has been deemed toxic and carcinogenic when taken internally.
  • Boneset is considered UNSAFE when taken by mouth in large amounts. Some plants that are related to boneset contain chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can damage the liver. It is not known if boneset contains these chemicals.
  • Diarrhea : may result from tremerol, a chemical that is toxic to your digestive system. In some cases, diarrhea may be severe enough to cause dehydration. Using concentrated forms of boneset in teas or tinctures may increase your risk of severe diarrhea.
  • Coma and Death : Although tremerol can cause diarrhea in small doses, it may induce coma or cause death when taken at high doses or on a long-term basis. This chemical may cause acute organ toxicity, triggering respiratory problems and preventing organ function. However, drying boneset may inactivate tremerol, lowering the risk of coma or fatality.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Because boneset may contain liver-damaging chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, it is considered UNSAFE. Don’t use it if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • Allergy to ragweed and related plants: Boneset may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Members of this family include ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, and many others. If you have allergies, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking boneset.
