Special Precautions of Huang Lian

  • Contraindicated for those with Yang Deficiency.
  • Contraindicated for those with Cold.
  • Contraindicated for those with Qi and Blood Deficiency.
  • Contraindicated for those with nausea or vomiting due to Stomach Deficiency Cold.
  • Contraindicated for those with Insomnia and fright due to Blood Deficiency, yet appearing with restless Heat and thirst.
  • Contraindicated for those with diarrhea and abdominal pain.
  • Contraindicated for those with fever due to Blood Deficiency.
  • Contraindicated for children who have pox and sores with diarrhea due to Yang Deficiency.
  • Contraindicated for those with postpartum insomnia.
  • Contraindicated for those with Yin Deficiency leading to Internal Heat and restless irritability.
  • Use with caution for those with diarrhea due to Spleen or Kidney Deficiency.
  • Long term use can cause injury to the Spleen and Stomach.

    • Damp-Heat in the Stomach or Intestines with diarrhea or dysenteric disorder, enteritis and vaginal infection, cholera, acute gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, staphylococcus
    • Stomach Heat with vomiting and/or acid regurgitation
  • Drains Fire and resolves Fire toxicity
    • Heat with Blazing Fire (Toxic Heat) with high fever. irritability, disorientation, delirium, a red tongue and a rapid, full pulse
    • Heat from Excess with toxicity painful, red eyes, otitis and a sore throat, ear, nose and throat infection
    • Boils, carbuncles and abscesses (Chuang Yung)
  • Clears Heat and stops bleeding : Blood Heat with epistaxis, hematemesis, hematuria, hemafecia and hemoptysis
