Special Precautions of Oroxylum indicum

  • No known side effects have been seen.
  • It is found to be safe to use in lactation period and in children.
  • During pregnancy it must be used only under medical supervision.

Health benefits and Uses of Oroxylum indicum

  • Oroxylum indicum has been mentioned in various Ayurvedic text such as Sushrut and Charak samhita. Charak has prescribed Shyonak as antiseptic, astringent and recommended for non-healing ulcers, female disorders and dysentery.
  • The leaves are emollient containing anthraquinone and aloe-emodin.
  • The root bark and stem bark have anti-allergic properties and are being used in treatment of allergic diseases, urticaria, jaundice, asthma, sore throat, laryngitis, hoarseness, diarrhoea, dysentery, infantile, erythema and measles
  • The chemical constituents of this herb consist of Baicalein, Tetuin, Oroxindin, aloe-emodin and chrysin.
  • A decoction of the bark is taken for curing gastric ulcer and a paste made of the bark powder is applied for mouth cancer, scabies and other skin diseases.
  • The seed is ground with fire-soot and the paste applied to the neck for quick relief of tonsil pain.
  • The seeds are used in Chinese medicine to treat abdominal pain, coughs, mouth ulcers and throat infection.
  • The bark of the roots is used for diarrhoea and dysentery in Indonesia and Malaysia and for dysentery, rheumatism and to induce perspiration in the Philippines.
  • The decoction of the leaves is drunk for stomach ache, loss of appetite and rheumatism in Malaysia. Externally, they are applied as a hot fomentation in fever, headache, cholera, dysentery, toothache as well as during and after labour.
  • a paste made of the bark is applied to the wounds of animals to kill maggots.
  • Decoction of the bark is given to animals for de-worming.
  • The sword-like fruit or a branch of the plant is used by the farmers to kill crabs in wet paddy fields.
