Costochondritis, also known as chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome, or costosternal chondrodynia is a benign and often temporary inflammation of the costal cartilage, which connects each rib to the sternum at the costosternal joint, and is a common cause of chest pain. Though costochondritis is often self-limited, it can be a recurring condition that can appear to have little or no signs of onset.

  • Taking supplements and eating foods that ease inflammation have helped sufferers to cope with costochondritis. This includes ginger root, bromelain, evening primrose oil, vitamin C and omega-3 oils. Immune-boosting supplements such as echinacea and antioxidants are said to help.
  • Noni fruit acts as an anti-inflammatory, and many sufferers have found relief for their chronic pain after taking noni for just a short period of time. Care should be taken, however, to purchase pure noni fruit juice that has not been mixed with filler juices or sugar.
  • Serrapeptase is a natural plant enzyme which is said to reduce pain and inflammation with no side effects. Many costochondritis sufferers have responded well to this enzyme, which is derived from silkworms.
  • Massage therapy and warm baths or showers are also said to be good remedies for alleviating chest pain. Patients should also get plenty of rest and reduce physical activity, especially during flare-ups.
