Helichrysum essential oil is made from the Mediterranean plant called Helichrysum angustifolium or Helichrysum italicum, also know by the common names immortelle or Italian everlasting. Growing up to 24 inches (60 cm), the oil is steam distilled from the flowers of this evergreen herb.

  • Be careful not to confuse with immortelle
  • Although there are no known safety concerns or side effects associated with aromatherapeutic use of helichrysum essential oil, it's crucial to note that helichrysum essential oil can be toxic when used internally.
  • Essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil before being used topically. When using essential oils, there is always the risk of contact sensitivity. A skin patch test is recommended prior to using any new essential oil.
  • Pregnant women and children should consult their primary health care providers prior to using essential oils.

Benefits and uses of Helichrysum are

Among all types of essential oils, helichrysum is one of the most prized, due its chemical compounds that ease a number of conditions. It contains high levels of sesquiterpenes, which are anti-inflammatory agents. Helichrysum essential oil also has anticoagulant and skin healing properties, due to a high level of di-ketone, which stimulates tissues to heal faster, and esters, chemical compounds that prevent tissue breakdown and dilate blood vessels. Helichrysum essential oil is typically used to treat the following conditions:
