* The oropharynx, which includes tumours of the base of tongue, tonsil and the undersurface of the soft palate.
* The hypopharynx, which includes tumours of the postcricoid area, pyriform sinus and the posterior pharyngeal wall.
* The nasopharynx, which is behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate.Cancers of the oropharynx and hypopharynx are, like oral cancer and cancer of the larynx, usually squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) which originate in the epithelial cells that line the throat.Cancer of the nasopharynx has a different aetiology and natural history (and is therefore discussed separately at the end of this article).
