When people diet, they start by cutting out fats. What they don't realize is that they are depriving their body of essential fatty acids the body cannot synthesize and live without. Conjugated linoleic acid provides raw materials that help with blood clotting, blood pressure, inflammation, body temperature, and other body functions. People are told to cut out fat from their diets unaware of the importance of good fats they are cutting out. According to an article published in The Journal of Nutrition (Dec 2000, Vol. 130, #12), conjugated linoleic acid has been shown to reduce body fat. A double blind randomized placebo study shows conjugated linoleic acid improves body composition by reducing fat and maintaining muscle tone.

Linoleic Acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is part of the Omega 6 fatty acids family. This is especially true for the growth and development of infants. It is a precursor for a hormone like substance prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are substances found in the body's cells. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid the body cannot produce itself so it must be included in the diet. Your body converts this into Gamma-linolenic acid GLA and other compounds.

Special Precautions of Linoleic Acid

  • Not to be confused with linolenic acid or lipoic acid.
  • Conjugated linoleic acid is LIKELY SAFE when used in amounts found in foods and is POSSIBLY SAFE for use in medicinal amounts (larger amounts than those found in food). It might cause side effects such as stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of conjugated linoleic acid in medicinal mounts during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
  • Diabetes: There are concerns that taking conjugated linoleic acid can worsen diabetes. Avoid use.
  • Metabolic syndrome: There are concerns that taking conjugated linoleic acid might increase the risk of getting diabetes if you have metabolic syndrome. Avoid use.

The benefits of Linoleic Acid are

Lipids and essential fatty acids are exceptionally important, serving essential, and indeed imperative roles throughout the body's biochemistry for our health and welfare. Lipids are the primary structural components of all cell walls and membranes of the body, composing some 50% of the dry weight of the brain, and 5-10% of all other cells. And, most cells continually degrade and replace these membrane lipids, so there is a continuous demand for them. Other lipids and essential fatty acids allow brain and neural function, maintenance and growth, interference of which leads to major neurological disorders, enzyme deficiencies and skin disorders of all types. Most of all lipids and fatty acids are necessary for Cardiovascular (eg. cardiolipin), Neurological and Dermatological Health (eg. linoleic acid and linolenic acid).

  • Help strengthen cell membrane integrity
  • Help repair cellular and tissue damage
  • Help optimize neurological transmission and brain function
  • Help improve heart and circulatory function
  • Help produce supple, moist skin
