Zika Virus
Zika fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by Zika virus (ZIKV), consisting of mild fever, rash (mostly maculo-papular), headaches, arthralgia, myalgia, asthenia, and non-purulent conjunctivitis, occurring about two to seven days after the mosquito vector bite. One out of four people may develop symptoms, but in those who are affected the disease is usually mild with symptoms that can last between two and seven days. Its clinical manifestation is often similar to dengue, also a mosquito-borne illness. Zika virus is related to dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile viruses.
Symptoms
Zika virus is a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Most people infected with Zika virus have no signs or symptoms, while others may report mild fever, rash and muscle pain. Other signs and symptoms may include headache, red eyes (conjunctivitis) and a general feeling of discomfort. Signs and symptoms of Zika virus usually begin two to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Data suggests that newborn babies of mothers who had a Zika virus infection during the first trimester of pregnancy are at an increased risk of microcephaly. In December 2015 it was suspected that a transplacental infection of the fetus may lead to microcephaly and brain damage.The Brazilian Ministry of Health has since confirmed the relation between the Zika virus and microcephaly.
