Celery

Celery is a plant. The fruit and seeds are dried or pressed into oil for use as medicine. Sometimes celery oil is marketed in capsule form. Some people also take celery juice as medicine. The ancient Greeks used celery to make wine, which was served as an award at athletic games.

Special Precautions of Celery

  • It may cause skin inflammation and sensitivity to the sun.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Celery oil and celery seeds are LIKELY UNSAFE when used during pregnancy. Large amounts of celery might make the uterus contract and cause a miscarriage. The safety of using celery while breast-feeding is unknown. It’s best to avoid celery in medicinal amounts if you are pregnant or nursing.
  • Allergies: Celery can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to certain other plants and spices including wild carrot, mugwort, birch, and dandelion. This has been called the “celery-carrot-mugwort-spice syndrome.”
  • Kidney problems: Don’t use celery in medicinal amounts if you have kidney problems. Celery might cause inflammation.
  • Surgery: Celery can affect the central nervous system. There is some concern that celery, in combination with anesthesia and other medications used during and after surgery might slow down the central nervous system too much. Stop using celery at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

  • Blood Pressure : Celery contains pthalides, which have been shown to lower blood pressure by relaxing the muscles around the arteries and allowing vessels to dilate. The calcium, magnesium, and potassium in celery also helps regulate blood pressure.
  • Cholesterol : The pthalides in celery may also lower cholesterol by increasing bile acid secretion.
  • Cancer : Celery contains coumarins which have been shown to be effective in the prevention of cancer.
  • Diuretic : Celery has been used as a diuretic for centuries. Its diuretic effect comes from its balance of potassium and sodium which helps to flush out excess fluid from the body.
  • Inflammation : Celery is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help with ailments attributed to inflammation such as arthritis.
  • Diet Aid : Celery will not directly cause you to lose weight, but it is a great aid in weight loss because it is very low in calories and has a lot of filling fiber.
