Hypotensive herbs cause low blood pressure, similar to antihypertensive which is an agent that lowers blood pressure. Their actions may involve effects on the cardiac conduction system. Several sedative herbs also have vasodilatory effects, and the adaptogens are considered by herbalists to be hypotensive in combination with antihypertensive prescriptions. Several vasodilators are considered specific for coronary arteriodilatation, like Hawthorn and Coleus whereas Ginkgo is considered to affect the cerebral circulation, but is a general peripheral vasodilator. Herboligists may also formulate treatments based on indirect interaction with herbs that may take place through various synergistic physiologic mechanisms.
