In Latin, this plant is called Chrysanthellem americanum vatke. Chrysos means 'gold' in Greek and anthos 'flower'. The Latin name is derived from this. The addition americanum is because North and Central America is the original origin of this plant. The flowering medicinal herb is mainly found in Jamaica, Honduras and Cuba. Today it also grows on the African savanna. This plant mainly grows on high plateaus. The Chrysantellum americanum (or Chrysanthellum) was introduced in European herbal medicine approximately 30 years ago. The whole plant is used for the preparation of natural medicines. The plant is not eaten, but it can be used to make tea. Usually a mother tincture, powder or liquid extract is prescribed.

Special Precautions of Chrysantellum americanum

The plant is safe to use compared to all kinds of medicines. It has a few side effects. This is not how you should take it if the bile ducts are blocked by a tumor or trapped gallstone. Furthermore, you should take it after meals as otherwise you may feel slightly nauseous, get heartburn or develop a headache. Also, it should not be used during acute hepatitis or gallbladder empyema.

Composition

The pharmacological activities of Chrysanthellum (Chrysantellum americanum) are deducted from :

  • The flavonoids are hepatoprotective and encourage microcirculation .
  • The saponins are venotropic and have properties surfactant , they thus potentiate the activity of flavonoids to facilitate their passage through the membrane cell .
  • phenolic acids caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid and sesquiterpenes.

Actions

The pharmacological study focused on three areas of action :

  • the hepatoprotective activity vis-à-vis ethyl alcohol and carbon tetra-chloride and the choleretic action, compared to sodium dehydrocholate, in the rat, testified to the revival of liver functions, while a parallel study conducted in humans showed significant results in improving liver condition.
  • has also been found to be a lipid lowering agent with respect to clofibrate, used as a reference drug, with however more spectacular results on triglycerides than on cholesterol.
  • In the study of vasculotropic properties of Chrysanthellum (Chrysantellum americanum), this was only slightly active (per os) on the rat, although superior to rutin and its derivatives, the results in humans were clearly superior. Clinical pharmacology work, carried out within the framework of this study, in the service of Professor Cloarec, at Saint-Antoine Hospital in Paris, demonstrated the significant effects of the drug on the microcirculation. The action of Chrysanthellum (Chrysantellum americanum) is analogous to vitamin P, coupled with a vasodilator activity, intervening directly on the vascular wall, as evidenced by the lengthening of the walking distance and Döppler. the antioedematous activity, evaluated in the rat, quite low when the drug is administered orally

Health Benefits and Uses of Chrysantellum americanum

It can be used against a wide variety of diseases, but its liver-strengthening property is the most common reason that a phytotherapist or homeopath will prescribe this plant. Virtually unknown two decades ago, Chrysanthellum (Chrysantellum americanum) could appear, in the near future, as a major hepato-vascular remedy , also endowed with significant anti-lithiasis , hypoglycemic and anti-inflammatory properties . It is a tropical plant with versatile and powerful activity , of essential importance in herbal medicine, which is mainly used:

  • In hepatic disorders for its hepato-protective role , in particular in poisoning of alcoholic origin, overeating and the consequences of hepatitis. Natural medicines based on chrysanthellum stimulate the functioning of the liver; the medical term for this is hepatoprotective. The flavonoids contained in this plant are responsible for this. This medicinal plant has a protective effect against nicotine and carbon tetrachloride. In addition, the metabolism of fats and cholesterol is improved by this plant. Conditions for which chrysanthellum is prescribed as a medicinal agent include:
    • alcoholic hepatitis,
    • Prevention and inhibition of liver cirrhosis,
    • Overload of the liver due to alcohol consumption,
    • Constipation due to malfunctioning liver,
    • Hepatic insufficiency, dyspepsia,
    • poor fat metabolism by the liver,
    • Poor digestion of fats by the liver,
    • Too high truglyceride content,
    • Post-treatment of jaundice.
  • Gallbladder support : Chrysanthellum dissolves gall and kidney stones. It dissolves stones the size of 3 mm and larger stones are prevented with this product. In addition, it promotes bile production. This medicinal plant has some important healing properties. It is used for the following indications:
    • biliary disorders,
    • Lithasis or gall and kidney stones,
    • salivary gland stones,
    • shooting pains,
    • Post-treatment after removal of lithasis and to treat lithiasis (calculations) of any origin.
  • blood circulation : Chrysanthemum is a tonic for the blood. Saponisides, vitamin P and flavonoids ensure a better blood flow. In addition, it improves the flow in the capillaries. In this regard, in medical terms this plant is called a venetrope and vasculotrope. It is used for the following indications:
    • Varicose veins, heavy tired legs, nighttime cramps,
    • open leg,
    • Hemorrhoids,
    • Arterial inflammation in the legs,
    • Peripheral circulatory disorders, blue discoloration of limbs,
    • Raynaud's disease,
    • Weak capillaries, bruising, couperose, for example on the cheeks,
    • Eye blood flow disorders such as glaucoma,
    • Impaired vision due to reduced blood circulation,
    • arteriosclerosis,
    • Post-treatment of tooth extraction.
  • for the adrenal gland : The chrysanthellum provides an anti-inflammatory effect by stimulating the adrenal gland. In medical terms, this medicinal plant is called an adaptogen. Because the adrenal effects are improved, it is a medicinal herb for the following, diverse indications:
    • Decreased libido or decreased sex drive,
    • Fatigue,
    • stress,
    • Joint disorders such as arthritis,
    • Arterial inflammations.
  • As main antihyperlipidemic treatment and adjunctive cholesterol-lowering treatment.
  • in Cuban traditional medicine is used for gastro-intestinal pains, rheumatism and kidney, strengthens and increases hair growth.
  • To improve peripheral microcirculation and capillary resistance (heavy legs, arteritis, rosacea).
  • To increase bile secretion and stimulate the digestive system .
