Special Precautions of Country Mallow

  • Country mallow is UNSAFE for any use. Country mallow contains ephedrine. Country mallow is banned in the US due to safety concerns. Another herb that contains ephedrine called ephedra is linked to high blood pressure, heart attacks, muscle disorders, seizures, strokes, irregular heartbeat, loss of consciousness, and death. Country mallow might also cause these side effects.
  • Country mallow might also cause dizziness, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, headache, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, flushing, tingling, difficulty urinating, and pounding heartbeat.
  • Do not use country mallow with other stimulants such as caffeine. This might increase the chance of having side effects, including life-threatening ones. Sources of caffeine include coffee, tea, kola nut, guarana, and mate.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Country mallow is UNSAFE. Do not use.
  • Chest pain (angina): Country mallow can make angina worse because it stimulates the heart. Country mallow is unsafe for anyone to use, but it is particularly unsafe if you have angina. Do not use.
  • Anxiety: Country mallow can stimulate the nervous system. Large doses might make anxiety worse. Do not use.
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), or heart disease: Because country mallow stimulates the heart, it might make these conditions worse. Country mallow is unsafe for anyone to use, but it is particularly unsafe if you have an irregular, rapid heartbeat, or heart disease. Do not use.
  • Diabetes: Country mallow might interfere with blood sugar control, and might worsen high blood pressure and circulatory problems in people with diabetes. Do not use.
  • Essential tremor: Country mallow might make essential tremor worse due to its stimulant effects. Do not use.
  • High blood pressure: Country mallow might make high blood pressure worse. Country mallow is unsafe for anyone to use, but it is particularly unsafe if you have high blood pressure. Do not use.
  • Thyroid problems: There is a concern that country mallow might stimulate the thyroid and make thyroid problems worse. Do not use.

Benefits and uses of Country Mallow are

  • Despite serious safety concerns S. cordifolia is used in Ayurvedic medicine (Sanskrit:-BALA).It is used in neurological ailments,especially in Stroke rehabilitation. Known as "malva branca", it is a plant used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation of the oral mucosa, blenorrhea, asthmatic bronchitis and nasal congestion, stomatitis, of asthma and nasal congestion and in many parts of Africa for various ailments, particularly for respiratory problems. It has been investigated as an anti-inflammatory, for preventing cell proliferation, and for encouraging liver re-growth.
  • Due to its ephedrine content, it possesses psychostimulant properties, affecting the central nervous system and also the heart.
  • A 50% ethanolic extract of Sida cordifolia tested on rats showed potent antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity comparable with the standard drug deprenyl.
  • The plant has demonstrated anti-pyretic and anti-ulcerogenic properties.
  • The aqueous extract of Sida cordifolia stimulates liver regeneration in rats.
