Fringe tree is small tree or shrub that is native to Eastern North America. The genus Chionanthus is also found in the tropics and subtropics, in eastern Asia. Most of the tropical species are evergreen. The common name fringe tree, or Old man's bead refers to the white flowers with fringe-like petals.

Special Precautions of Fringe Tree

  • Overdose has been shown to cause vomiting, frontal headaches, and to cause a slow pulse rate (DeVries, 2010).
  • Avoid during gallstone attacks

bitters, saponins, phyllyrin, chionanthin

Actions

Aperient, cholagogue, diuretic, febrifuge, hepatic, laxative, Antibilious and tonic.

Health Benefits and Uses of Fringe Tree

  • Traditionally, the bark is used to make a tea which is consumed in order to reduce fever, relieve dyspepsia, jaundice, gallstones, to stimulate vomiting, to treat hepatitis, colic, headache, migraines, and malaria, and has been consumed due to beneficial effects on kidney and liver inflammations.
  • A poultice made from the bark was traditionally used by Native Americans to clean wounds and sores (particularly infected) and skin irritations (Devries, 2010).
  • The root acts as a bitter,stimulating release of bile, which increases gastric secretion and improved appetite and digestion.
  • The roots of the fringe tree are dried and used to treat liver and gallbladder disease in traditional American folk medicine, often in combination with barberry and other herbs containing berberine.
  • Hepatorestorative (liver supporting) and cholerectic (increasing bile) herbs such as Milkthistle (Silybum marianum), fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) and schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) are an important part of treatment for IBS.
  • hepatitis : it has been studied as a component of hepatitis medication. It has been discovered to contain a new ligand (phillyrin-6-O-beta-D-glucoside) which is believed to be useful in medication of hepatitis (Boyer et al., 2005; Boyer, et al., 2011).
