Other name : Hashimoto's disease, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis
is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland is gradually destroyed, currently the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.

Causes

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include a family history of the condition and having another autoimmune diseases. Diagnosis is confirmed with blood tests for TSH, T4, and antithyroid antibodies. Other conditions that can produce similar symptoms include Graves' Disease and nontoxic nodular goiter.

Symptoms

  • Early on there may be no symptoms.
  • Over time the thyroid may enlarge forming a painless goitre.
  • Some people eventually develop hypothyroidism with its accompanying weight gain, feeling tired, constipation, depression, and general pains.
  • After many years the thyroid typically shrinks in size.
  • Potential complications include thyroid lymphoma.

Home remedies

  • Adaptogenic herbs - such as ashwagandha, ginseng and rhodiola, (to name a few) can be useful in treating Hashimoto's disease.
  • You can also support thyroid health by getting sufficient amounts of trace minerals, such as zinc and selenium, as well as vitamins A and C.

Warnings

Iodine, obtained from seaweed and sea vegetables, can also promote healthy thyroid function. However, some healthcare providers say that too much iodine can actually be harmful to those with Hashimoto's disease, so be sure to discuss your iodine intake with a trusted, integrative physician.
