Kayam Tablet is an over the counter Ayurvedic medicine for constipation. It is not a traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is a proprietary Ayurvedic medicine. It means that the formula of Kayam churna is not mentioned in any Traditional Ayurvedic text books.

Side Effects of Kayam Churna

  • Always stick on to the recommended dose of kayam churna. A higher dose of this medicine may bring about gastric distress, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, and dehydration. Prolonged use of kayam churna exhibits side effects like acidity, stomach pain , diarrhea and dehydration.
  • Gastric disturbances: cramps and acidity
  • Can cause mild to moderate diarrhea resulting in dehydration.
  • Nishoth in Kayam churna has an abortifacient property and the effect of Kayam Churna on the newborn baby and breastfeeding baby is not known yet. Therefore, avoid its use during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Contraindicated for children, elderly people, those who are weak, pregnant woman, menstruating woman, person who have recently undergone vamana and virechana( bala-vriddha-garbhini-sukumara..) However, kayam churnam can be taken in case of bloating and constipation for a prescribed period of time without experiencing any of these side effects. Any Ayurvedic medicine should be taken under the supervision of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner only. Even Amrita becomes visha if not handled properly, same is the case of medicines too.
  • Dependency : Drug dependence is one of the major side effects of kayam churna. It contains senna herb which is a habit-forming laxative. If you use it over and over again, then your body starts to rely on it for the bowel movement. Eventually, it turns that once you stop taking Kayam churna, the stools start to harden again. So it is better to use Kayam Churna occasionally only.
  • Swarjika Kshara in kayam churna can bring about sperm count and affect the quality of sperms. Therefore, men suffering from sperm-related problems or planning for a baby should avoid prolonged use of kayam churna.
  • People with diabetes should use this medicine only after consulting a doctor.
  • Kayam churna contain salt and licorice. Patients having hypertension and high levels of potassium and the person who is on diet with low sodium intake should use this medicine only under medical supervision.
