Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges.The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of meningitis are headache and neck stiffness associated with fever, confusion or altered consciousness, vomiting, and an inability to tolerate light (photophobia) or loud noises (phonophobia). Sometimes, especially in small children, only nonspecific symptoms may be present, such as irritability and drowsiness. If a rash is present, it may indicate a particular cause of meningitis; for instance, meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria may be accompanied by a characteristic rash

Home remedies

  • Drink lots and lots of liquids in the form of juice everyday. You may take lemonade, orange juice and juice of other citrus fruits and other acidic drinks. This will help you in increasing the saliva flow.
  • Soya Bean Milk and Honey - You may also take 1 cup of Soya bean milk mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey, everyday before sleeping at night for 3-4 months.
  • Garlic has many good antibacterial properties and will help you out in curing the disease fast. You can take one capsule or one fresh clove, three times daily, until the infection clears completely.
  • American Ginseng is another good herb for used for the treatment of meningitis. It will support and strengthen your child's immune system. You can give one dose of this herb for two weeks, three times daily.
  • Astragalus ( Astragalus membranaceous ), will also help your child strengthen immune system. One dose of this herb can also be given three times daily for two weeks
  • Hypericum extract

  • Reishi mushroom is known as the mushroom of immortality to herbalists and those who practice Chinese medicine. The extract is derived from the cap and stem of the mushroom with the scientific name Ganoderma Lucidum. The Reishi mushroom is used, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, to stimulate the immune system of patients suffering from HIV infection and cancer.
  • Olive leaves contain a substance called oleuropein, which is a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it can eliminate free radicals from the body, helping to prevent damage to cells. In addition, once oleuropein is in the body it converts to elenoic acid which helps to inhibit viruses and bacteria from dividing and growing, therefore helping to fight off infections such as viral meningitis.

Warnings

Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord; therefore the condition is classified as a medical emergency.
