Special Precautions of Niu Huang

  • Contraindicated during pregnancy.
  • Contraindicated for those with no Heat Excess.
  • Contraindicated for those with Spleen and Stomach Deficiencies.
  • Contraindicated for infants with diarrhea due to poor digestion of milk.
  • Contraindicated for those with Wind-Stroke in the channels with facial paralysis, numbness of the skin or partial paralysis of the limbs.
  • Antagonizes Fossila Ossis Mastoidi Long Gu.
  • Antagonizes Rx. Rehmanniae Sheng Di Huang.
  • Antagonizes Rx. Gentianae Long Dan Cao.
  • Antagonizes Rx. Dichroa Chang Shan.
  • Counteracts Rx. Achyranthis Bidentate Niu Xi.
  • Niu Huang has a mild sedative effect. It reduces the stimulation induced by caffeine and enhances the sedation induced by morphine and barbiturates and other sedatives.

Benefits and uses of Niu Huang are

  • Clears the Heart, opens the Orifices aromatically, awakens the Spirit and vaporizes Phlegm
    • Delirium or coma due to Hot Phlegm Obstructing the Pericardium or Warm-Heat pathogen
    • Wind-Stroke, convulsions or seizures
  • Clears the Liver, relieves Fire toxicity, extinguishes Wind and stops tremors
    • Extreme Heat Generates Liver Wind with high fever, spasms, tremors or convulsions
  • Drains Heat and resolves Fire toxicity
    • Carbuncles, boils and a wide variety of Hot swellings (Chuang Yung) (can be used as a stand-alone herb)
