Mostly a symptom of Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis

Causes

A sore throat is usually from irritation or inflammation. The most common cause (80%) is acute viral pharyngitis, a viral infection of the throat. Other causes include other infections (such as streptococcal pharyngitis), trauma, and tumors. Gastroesophageal (acid) reflux disease can cause stomach acid to back up into the throat and also cause the throat to become sore. In children streptococcal pharyngitis is the cause of 37% of sore throats.

  • Lose weight. Studies show losing 10 percent of your body fat can improve acid reflux symptoms.
  • Get plenty of rest : A sore throat is sometimes caused by fatigue. If that is the case, it might be best to get yourself some rest. Not only does it ease the pressure on your throat to work hard, but it also provides you with more energy to combat an infection.
  • Eliminate dry air, which can irritate a sore throat, by using a cold air humidifier.
  • Start your day with a cup of warm water and fresh lemon juice. “By drinking this on an empty stomach 15 to 20 minutes before eating anything else, the body can naturally balance out its acid levels. It’s a great digestive aid and is safe for all users,” says Rebekah Fedrowitz, an applied holistic nutritionist.

  • Use sore throat lozenges to increase saliva production and lubricate the throat. Lozenges shouldn’t be given to young children due to the risk of choking.
  • Adjust your thermostat. For some people, a warmer room may lead to dryness, which can aggravate a dry, irritated throat.
