Wild Angelica

Other Names : European Angelica, Root of the Holy Ghost, Wild Angelica, Bai Zhi, Angelica Root. Angelica archangelica, synonym Archangelica officinalis; Angelica atropurpurea, Angelica sylvestris; Angelica curtisi; Angelica rosaefolia; Angelica pubescens. Family: Apiaceae/Umbelliferae.

Special Precautions of Wild Angelica

  • Bai Zhi is contraindicated in cases where you have been diagnosed with deficient blood or ying patterns, because it is very drying.
  • When using Bai Zhi to treat sores, take caution of the sore has already burst.

The benefits of Wild Angelica are

The most common use for Bai Zhi though, is for sudden headaches (Wind-caused headaches), especially those along the Stomach channel, i.e. the front of the head, the forehead. It is particularly good for headaches caused by sinusitis, and to help the sinusitis itself. It is very good for ulcerated boils in cases where the pus is not yet discharged; use it with Jie Geng. Bai Zhi is often added to prescriptions for vaginal discharge, especially for a white discharge (Cold type) rather than a yellow, smelly one (Hot type). However, with the right combinations, one could use Bai Zhi for other types of headaches or discharges.

  • Opens nasal passages, sinus congestion (particularly with green discharge), alleviates pain (especially in the head region)
  • Resolve wind-cold symptoms especially with headaches (yangming - ST), supraorbital pain, congestion
  • Useful for swollen gums and toothache
