Health Benefits and uses of Winter's Bark
The tree derives its common name from the tea made from the bark, given to Captain Winter by Native Americans, during an expedition with Sir Francis Drake. He was suffering from an upset stomach and apparently was cured. His crew were given the peppery fragranced leaves, rich in vitamin C to combat scurvy.
- Infusion leaves: intoxicating narcotic, used for dulling birth pains and stomachaches, also as a vermifuge.
- Infusion stem-bark: for treating scurvy, toothache and cancers.
- Plant burnt: to fumigate for treatment of boils and ulcers.
- Infusion leaves and stem-bark drunk for stomach pains and cramp, toothache and ulcers and against scurvy.
- Cancer (Melanoma) : evidence provides a scientific support for the anticancer employ of Drimys winteri in traditional medicinal and suggests that active molecules can be considered potential candidates to be tested also in in vivo models, alone or in combination with chemotherapy agents, for the management of melanoma.
