Classification

Causes

  • Age: Generally, the risk of NHL increases with advancing age.
  • Infections
    • Infection with HIV
    • Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), one of the etiologic factors in mononucleosis
    • Infection with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that lives in the digestive tract
    • Infection with hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus
  • Medical conditions that compromise the immune system
    • HIV
    • Autoimmune disease
    • Use of immune suppressive therapy (often used following organ transplant)
    • Inherited immunodeficiency diseases (severe combined immunodeficiency, ataxia telangiectasia, among a host of others)
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
    • Farm work or an occupation with exposure to certain toxic chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, or benzene and/or other solvents
    • Hair dye use has been linked to higher rates of lymphoma especially in patients who started to use the dyes before 1980.
  • Genetics: Family history of lymphoma
  • New research from Sweden shows that if the intestinal villi don't recover, people with Celiac Disease have nearly four times the risk of lymphoma compared to healthy people without celiac disease.

Symptoms

Lymphoma presents with certain non-specific symptoms. If symptoms are persistent, lymphoma needs to be excluded medically.

  • Lymphadenopathy or swelling of lymph nodes - It is the primary presentation in lymphoma.
  • B symptoms (systemic symptoms) - Can be associated with both Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. They consist of:
    • Fever of unknown origin
    • Night sweats
    • Weight loss
  • Other Symptoms :
    • Loss of appetite or anorexia
    • Fatigue
    • Respiratory distress or dyspnoea
    • Itching
